Alaska: The Great Land
There are a TON of different cruise lines that ply the waterways of Alaska, but there are only a select few that we recommend to clients who are looking for an immersive, destination focused, small or medium sized ship experience in Alaska. These lines have been chosen for their unique approaches to immersion through their enrichment presentations in Alaska’s history, culture, and wildlife; onboard activities and events that bring a taste of the region onto the ship; and/or culinary experiences that highlight the flavors and techniques used in Alaska’s unique culinary culture. Please take a moment to explore the cruise lines below and don’t hesitate to call or e-mail us with any questions you may have.
Holland America has been offering cruises in Alaska longer than any other cruise line. For 75 years, they have been cruising in Alaska highlighting the history, culture and wildlife of the region. Their enrichment and port talks are some of the best in the business, their exclusive onboard Seafood Boil and extensive use of Alaskan ingredients in their menus, prime docking locations in all ports, and their extensive array of itineraries visiting Glacier Bay National Park (they hold more permits into the park than any other cruise line) are what make Holland America our “go to” choice in Alaska.
As a medium sized ship cruise line (ranging from 1450 to 2650 passengers), they offer a more intimate and relaxed experience than larger ships while still providing a wide range of choice in dining, entertainment, and accommodations. Holland’s Music Walk experience is a music lovers dream and their shows on the World Stage will keep everyone entertained. As a premium cruise line, they offer an elevated experience in comfort, décor, and cuisine while maintaining a casual and fun experience. And don’t forget your swimsuit because all Holland ships have swimming pools with a retractable roof so no matter what the weather is outside, a dip in the pool is always an option.

THE ALASKA EXPERIENCE
THE LATEST & GREATEST
Silversea is the pinnacle of luxury in Alaska! Providing unparalleled comfort and service, an all-inclusive experience (all beverages, excursions, gratuities, wi-fi and up to 8 dinning venues included in your fare), and an all-suite ship, you can be sure that a Silversea voyage to Alaska will leave you wanting for nothing. Silversea has remolded the luxury cruise experience into a more casual experience for those that like the finer things but want their Alaska cruise to be more relaxed. 5-star service, cuisine, and accommodations are the order of the day, and did I mention that every suite onboard (meaning every cabin onboard) has its own butler? But don’t let all that pampering make you think it might be too snooty. In the case of Silversea, luxury is defined by its intuitive service, the ability to personalize your experience to your tastes, and to arrive home rested, relaxed, and more connected to Alaska’s unique character. Their small ships (596 to 750 passengers) allow Silversea to take you to smaller, less visited ports as well as the Big 3 ports (Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan) visited by most cruise lines.
Where Silversea really stands out though is it’s Sea and Land, Taste program (better known as S.A.L.T.) S.A.L.T. brings the unique cuisine of the destinations you visit onboard in the form of the S.A.L.T. Kitchen, an included dining venue with a menu that changes daily and highlights the best of Alaskan ingredients and cooking techniques, the S.A.L.T. Bar, which takes inspiration from the region you visit to create crafted cocktails unique to the destination, and the S.A.L.T. Lab, offering interactive cooking classes which teach you how to use and prepare local ingredients in recipes inspired by Alaska.

Viking Ocean cruises bring a modern Scandinavian sensibility to the waters of Alaska. Their smaller size (930 passengers), sleek and contemporary design, and focus on the history, culture, wildlife and natural history of Alaska make Viking an exceptional choice for a voyage to Alaska. Known as the “Thinking Persons Cruise Line”, Viking provides a more academic approach to your Alaska experience with some of the most immersive enrichment talks at sea and an onboard library filled with books about Alaska and her people. It’s hard to find a more informative and educational experience than this. Viking is unique in that it is an adult only cruise line (18+).
But, don’t think Viking is only about “Book Learnin’ ”, they offer one included shore excursion in each port as well as a wide array of land based experiences at an extra cost. In terms of inclusions, Viking fits somewhere in between Holland America and Silversea. All dining venues, wi-fi, and gratuities, as well as beer and wine with lunch and dinner are included in your fare. Service is elevated without being pretentious and delivers a relaxed, reinvigorating experience. Oh, I almost forgot that access to an incredible Thermal Suite in the spa is available to all passengers and is included in your fare.

VIKING OCEAN SHIPS
HX Expeditions brings the expedition experience to Alaska with a focus on wildlife, native cultures and the natural beauty that draws passengers to Alaska. You can’t get closer to whales, bears, sea otters and moose than you can on an expedition cruise. Rather than providing a port intensive itinerary like most traditional cruise lines, HX takes you to the hidden coves, fjords and glaciers that dot Alaska’s coast as well as introduce you to hard to reach coastal communities and native villages and their peoples in a respectful, informative and sustainable way. HX puts special emphasis on environmental science with an onboard science center and an expedition team made up of naturalists, biologists, geologists and oceanographers who encourage you to assist in the studies they are conducting onboard and educate you on Alaska’s changing climate and the effects in has on the flora and fauna that call Alaska home.
By expedition ship standards, HX’s ship in Alaska (MS Roald Amundsen) is large at 500 passengers, but the size of the ship allows for greater creature comforts than most expedition ships. Scandinavian materials from nature, such as granite, oak, birch and wool are used to create relaxed and stylish cabins and public areas. All cabins are outside cabins, of which 50% have private balconies, and aft suites feature private outdoor hot tubs with spectacular views. An HX trip includes everything from daily excursions and activities to the onboard Science Centre, meals, gratuities, drinks and more. All designed to give you the expedition experience of a lifetime.
